Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward Virtual Town Hall, 2-24-21

Sen. Hayward’s (D, SD-17) first Virtual Town Hall of the 2021 session will be on Wednesday, February 24th, from 5:30-6:30 PT. Town Halls are a way for people interested in her work, especially those who live in Senate District 17, to stay connected during these strange times, and to ask questions about what she’s working on in the legislature for you. Registration is required to attend the Town Hall; you can register at this link.

Her two policy initiatives, SJR 12 and SCR 3, have been introduced and will be heard by the Senate Health Care Committee. SJR 12 (The HOPE Amendment) proposes that healthcare be enshrined as a right in the Oregon Constitution. If the Legislature passes the Amendment, it will then go on the ballot for the voters to weigh in. The Amendment was originally proposed by the late Representative Mitch Greenlick; SCR 3 is a memorial resolution for Rep. Greenlick.

Additionally, she is co-chief sponsoring two other recently introduced bills. The first, HB 2679, permits Oregonians who will be 17 years old by the date of a primary election and 18 years old by the date of a general election to vote in that primary election. She is proud of Oregon’s status as a leader on issues of enfranchisement, and believes that this measure will only increase our civic engagement. The second bill, HB 2650, requires the government to make meetings accessible remotely through technology even when we return to in-person meetings. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for our government to increase remote access to meetings, and she is excited that this measure will give people the opportunity to more easily participate in government.
