SB 283B Study of health risks from technology in classrooms

This bill directs Oregon Health Authority to review scientific studies on the health effects of exposure to microwave radiation in schools or similar environments, and directs Department of Education to develop recommendations on practices and alternative technologies to reduce students’ exposure to microwave radiation.

Personal Choice and Responsibility
Many Oregon schools use tablets and computers in classroom lessons, which, when combined with hours of the same use at home, could be unsafe for children.

Limited Government
Oregon’s Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority are required to study health risks and set guidelines for safe computer use in schools. Directs ODE to inform schools about potential health hazards of using wireless network technology in schools and to provide recommendations for minimizing exposure to possible harmful effects. Directs Oregon Health Authority to review peer-reviewed, independently funded scientific studies of health effects of exposure to microwave radiation, particularly exposure that results from use of wireless network technologies in schools and to report results of review to interim committee of Legislative Assembly related to education not later than January 2, 2021.
