The Act makes March 21 of each year Nowruz Day in Oregon. Declares an emergency, effective on passage – an emergency to prepare for 10 months?
Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is rooted in the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism that emphasizes broad concepts such as the work of good and evil in the world and the connection of humans to nature.
The state should not be endorsing any religious based day under the separation of state from church, which requires the state to stay out of religion.
None of the “WhereAs” in this bill are valid reasons for the state to push a day of celebration on false pretenses.
Oregonians are looking for serious work and not create problems and discourse. This bill will never unify communities, if that is the point.
