SB 1581 –  explanation is “Requires school districts to offer lunch and breakfast to students at no charge, regardless of income”. Amendments and discussion on SB 1581 added that it may allow exceptions such as only letting a school provide the breakfast for students under the poverty level by 300%. Others want free breakfast for all — regardless of income.

EMAIL WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE AND ALL LEGISLATORS TO STOP ANOTHER BUDGET-BUSTING PROGRAM.

Amendment -2  replaces Sections 1-3 of the measure with substantially similar language. It requires the State
Board of Education to adopt rules for determining when free breakfast or lunch must still be provided even when
funds are insufficient, with a priority for students below 300 percent of federal poverty guidelines. It also removes
the requirement for school districts to meet updated federal nutrition standards and reorganizes provisions of the
measure.

The bill is a result of influx of illegals. It is touted that we do not have enough monies to fund ODOT, but we have enough to fund a new program? This is basically another redistribution of wealth furthing social justice in Oregon. People are leaving this state because the tax burden is not sustainable for working middle-class families.

Here is the risk:

  • The more Oregon provides benefits not found in other states or communities, the more people will migrate here and overwhelm our services.
  • The Atlantic magazine said Oregon was seen as a “welfare utopia” by the rest of America. As a result, people leave those states for Oregon.
  • Homelessness has dropped across America, except for certain Blue states, like Oregon which saw a 30% increase.
  • California has been cited for shipping their poor citizens to Oregon to take advantage of our unique benefits.
  • Oregon has had more relaxed Food Stamp rules and therefore we are the nation’s #3 biggest Food Stamp state in America per-capita.

Lawmakers should be extremely cautious about creating new programs that invite more participants. ~Oregon Catalyst~
